What's the best way to get Christmas light customers?

Start with your past customers, then work outward from them. A lit house advertises to the whole street, so the neighbors of your existing installs are usually your warmest new prospects. After that, add local search and door-to-door sales to reach homeowners who haven't started looking yet.

What to do each month

August and September

Lock in last year's customers

Contact everyone you installed for last season before anyone else does, and offer to hold their spot. Set your prices and your install capacity now, so you know how many new customers you can take.

October

Go after new customers

Homeowners start thinking about lights around now and your calendar is still open. Start knocking doors, put out yard signs, and ask for referrals. This is usually the best month to fill your schedule.

November

Sell the remaining dates

Urgency is on your side: dates are running out, and you can say so honestly. Work streets near the homes you've already installed, where neighbors can see the finished result.

December and January

Set up next season

Book your takedowns, then ask every customer whether they want the same spot next year. Photograph your best installs while they're lit, because those photos will sell next year's jobs.

Which marketing channels fit

ChannelWhy it worksThe catch
Past customersThe cheapest jobs you'll ever book.Only works once you have a customer list.
Neighbors of current installsThe finished house does the selling for you.Someone still has to knock on those doors.
Google Search and MapsReaches people already looking to hire.Rankings take time, and ads get pricier in season.
Facebook and neighborhood groupsLow cost, and good photos travel well. Results are hit or miss, and take steady posting.
Door-to-door repsReaches homeowners who weren't searching yet.You depend on having reps active in your area.

Having door-to-door reps sell for you

Doorden connects you with independent reps who knock doors and send you quotes. You pay nothing to join and nothing per lead. On a $1,500 install, the homeowner's 18% deposit covers $180 for the rep and $90 for Doorden, and you collect the other $1,230 directly.

Reps quote from the pricing on your profile, so write it in a way they can use at the door. Give prices by size of home, and say whether lights and takedown are included.

Example pricing layout
  • Roofline, 1 story, up to 100 ft: $400 to $600
  • Roofline, 2 story, up to 150 ft: $700 to $1,000
  • Wrapped tree, each: $100 to $200
  • Minimum job: $350
  • Lights, installation, and takedown included

These numbers only show the layout, so use your own. List what the homeowner pays for the full job. The rep's commission is handled automatically and shouldn't appear in your pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How do Christmas light installers get customers?

Most combine repeat customers, referrals, local search, yard signs, and door-to-door sales. Repeat customers are the foundation, because many homeowners rebook the same company. New customers tend to come from people who can see your work on their street.

When should I start marketing my Christmas light business?

Start with past customers in late summer and new customers by October. If it's already November, you can still sell, so focus on streets near your existing installs and be upfront about which dates remain.

How does Doorden work for Christmas light companies?

You list your service area and pricing for free. Local reps request to partner with you, you approve the ones you want, and they knock doors and send you quotes with photos and details. You accept, edit, or decline each quote before any work is booked.

What does it cost?

Nothing to join and nothing per lead. When a homeowner books, they pay an 18% deposit through Doorden, which covers the rep's 12% commission and Doorden's 6% fee. You collect the remaining 82% directly from the homeowner.

Will reps be available in my area?

It depends on where you are. Doorden is growing, and some areas have more active reps than others, so we can't promise coverage in time for this season. Joining is free, and if you know someone who would sell for you, they can sign up as a rep and request to partner with you.
