Everyone starts at zero. The reps making $5,000 a month today had a first week where nothing went right. These 10 tips are what separate the ones who stick with it from the ones who quit after day three.

1. Your First 10 Doors Are Practice

Don't try to close anything in your first 10 doors. Just talk to people. Get comfortable with the rhythm of someone opening the door and looking at you. The nerves go away faster than you think — but only if you keep knocking.

2. Dress Like You Belong

You don't need a suit. But you need to look clean, put together, and intentional. A collared shirt, clean shoes, and a confident posture will get more doors opened than any script you memorize.

3. Smile Before They Open the Door

People can hear a smile through a door. Stand up straight, relax your face into a natural smile, and have it ready before they even turn the handle. First impressions happen in the first second.

4. Lead With a Question, Not a Pitch

The fastest way to get a door closed in your face is to start talking about what you're selling. Start with a question instead. "Have you had your roof inspected since the storm last month?" is infinitely better than "I'm here to offer you a free roof inspection."

5. No Means Not Yet

Most "no's" aren't permanent. They're "not right now" or "I don't know you well enough yet." Thank them, leave a card, and move on. Some of your biggest commissions will come from callbacks weeks later.

6. Work in Focused Blocks

Two focused hours of knocking beats five scattered hours every time. Pick a start time, a territory, and don't stop until the block is done. Momentum compounds — your tenth door goes better than your first.

7. Track Everything

Doors knocked. Conversations had. Leads submitted. Deals closed. You can't improve what you don't measure. Even a simple note in your phone after each session gives you data to get better.

8. Know the Product Cold

You don't need to know everything about roofing to sell roof inspections. But you need to know enough to answer three basic questions confidently. Talk to your business partner before you start knocking — ask them the most common questions homeowners ask.

9. Stay in Your Territory

Reps who chase new neighborhoods every day never build momentum. Work one area systematically. Neighbors talk. By your third time through a street, some doors that were closed start opening because they heard about you from someone else.

10. Show Up Consistently

The rep who knocks doors three days a week for a month will always out-earn the rep who goes hard for one weekend and disappears. Consistency beats intensity every single time in this business.

Start with these. Apply one at a time. By week three, knocking doors will feel as natural as anything else you do — and the checks will start showing it.
